The Gambia National Olympic Committee Sustainability Commission convened its inaugural meeting on Wednesday, 8th April 2026, at the GNOC Board Room to outline strategic priorities for the 2024–2028 quadrennial.

The meeting was chaired by Mr. Yorro Njie Secretary General of the GNOC, bringing together members to set a clear roadmap for integrating sustainability into the Olympic movement in The Gambia. Discussions focused on establishing practical frameworks, policies, and initiatives that will guide the Commission’s work over the next four years.

A Sustainability Commission plays a vital role in ensuring that sports development aligns with environmental protection, social inclusion, and economic responsibility. Its responsibilities typically include promoting eco-friendly sporting events, encouraging responsible resource management, advancing gender equality and inclusion, and supporting community based initiatives that leave a lasting positive impact.

Importantly, the Commission’s work is aligned with the sustainability agenda of the International Olympic Committee, which emphasizes sustainability as a core pillar of Olympism. The IOC’s approach encourages National Olympic Committees to integrate sustainable practices across all operations ranging from event organization and infrastructure to education and partnerships, while contributing to global efforts such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The GNOC Sustainability Commission is therefore poised to play a transformative role in embedding sustainability principles within the Gambian sports ecosystem, ensuring that development today does not compromise the needs of future generations.
