The Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC), in its capacity as the Commonwealth Games Association (CGA) for The Gambia, had the honour of hosting Dr. Donald Rukare, President of Commonwealth Sport, during his recent visit to The Gambia from 9th to 11th June 2026.
Dr. Rukare was in the country to attend the Board Meeting of the Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa (IHRDA), a pan-African non-profit organisation headquartered in Brusubi Layout, The Gambia.
Established in 1998, IHRDA works to promote the effective use of the African Human Rights System and combat impunity across the continent.
Taking advantage of his presence in The Gambia, Dr. Rukare met with officials of the GNOC and The Gambia Commonwealth Games Association to discuss matters of mutual interest and further strengthen the relationship between Commonwealth Sport and Gambian sport.
A special dinner was held in his honour at Butchers Restaurant in Fajara, where he was warmly received by GNOC President Mr. Bai Dodou Jallow, members of the Executive Board, and other stakeholders. During the occasion, Dr. Rukare was presented with the prestigious GNOC Crystal Award in recognition of his leadership, dedication, and contribution to the advancement of sport within the Commonwealth, ANOCA and the world.
Speaking during the dinner, GNOC President Mr. Bai Dodou Jallow and the 2nd Vice President, Mr. Bakary Jammeh, who will serve as The Gambia’s Chef de Mission for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, underscored the significance of the engagement.
They noted that the meeting provided an excellent opportunity to discuss areas of common interest, explore potential partnerships and collaboration, share updates on ongoing activities and aspirations, and further strengthen ties with Commonwealth Sport. They also highlighted the importance of gaining valuable insights into emerging developments and opportunities within the Commonwealth Sport Movement that could benefit athletes and sports organisations in The Gambia.
Dr. Rukare a lawyer by profession, expressed his appreciation for the warm hospitality extended to him and commended the GNOC for its continued efforts in promoting sport development and advancing the values of the Commonwealth Sport Movement in The Gambia.
The GNOC remains committed to fostering strong international partnerships that create opportunities for Gambian athletes, coaches, administrators, and sports organisations, while contributing to the overall development of sport in the country.
