Glasgow, Scotland, July 26, 2026 – Team Gambia, government officials and members of the Gambian community in Scotland came together on Sunday to celebrate Gambia Day, a vibrant event held on the sidelines of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The celebration was attended by the Minister of Youth and Sport, Hon. Bakary Y. Badjie, The Gambia’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Her Excellency Dr. Fatoumatta Bom Bensouda, President of the Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC), Bai Dodou Jallow, members of the GNOC Executive Committee, Team Gambia athletes and officials, as well as members of the Gambian diaspora.
The event showcased Gambian culture through traditional music, dance and community engagement while providing an opportunity for the nation to rally behind Team Gambia as they continue their campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Addressing the gathering, GNOC President Bai Dodou Jallow thanked the Gambian community for turning out in large numbers to support Team Gambia. He praised the athletes for their commitment and resilience, urging them to continue competing with determination and to uphold the values of excellence, friendship and respect throughout the Games.
Minister of Youth and Sport Hon. Bakary Y. Badjie reaffirmed the Government’s unwavering commitment to the development of sports in The Gambia. He commended the athletes for proudly representing the nation on the international stage and acknowledged the important role of the Gambian diaspora in promoting national unity and supporting the country’s sporting ambitions.
In her remarks, The Gambia’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Her Excellency Dr. Fatoumatta Bom Bensouda, welcomed Team Gambia and members of the community, describing the celebration as a testament to the unity and patriotism of Gambians abroad. She encouraged the athletes to remain focused and continue serving as worthy ambassadors of The Gambia while assuring them of the High Commission’s continued support during their stay in the United Kingdom.
The celebration also featured cultural performances, entertainment and interactions between athletes and members of the Gambian community, further strengthening the bond between Team Gambia and its supporters.
Gambia Day concluded in an atmosphere of unity, pride and optimism, with renewed encouragement for Team Gambia as they continue to fly the national flag high at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
