Banjul The Gambia, June 15, 2026 - The Gambia Taekwondo Association (GTA) has extended its heartfelt appreciation to the Executive Board of the Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC) for its support towards the successful staging of the 2nd Edition of the National Taekwondo Championship.

In a message of gratitude issued by GTA Secretary General and GNOC Board Member, Mr. Philip E. L. Mendy, the association thanked the GNOC Executive Board for approving its budget and helping to make the championship a memorable success.

The association also expressed special appreciation to GNOC President Bai Dodou Jallow and Secretary General Yorro Njie for attending the event and representing the GNOC leadership.

The championship, which was held in honour of the late Bakeba BKS Suso, brought together nine clubs and eighty-nine athletes from across the country. The strong participation highlighted the continued growth and development of Taekwondo in The Gambia and showcased the increasing interest in the sport among young athletes.

According to the GTA, despite the challenges encountered during the preparations, the event achieved its objectives and provided a fitting tribute to the late sports administrator, whose contributions to Taekwondo and the Olympic Movement in The Gambia remain highly valued.

One of the most emotional moments of the championship was the presence of the Suso family, particularly the daughters of the late Bakeba BKS Suso. The association revealed that the youngest daughter has expressed a desire to continue her father’s legacy by taking up Taekwondo. She is expected to join Stubble Taekwondo Club in Abuko under the guidance of Master Sung.

The GTA described this development as both inspiring and symbolic of the enduring impact of the late Suso’s commitment to the sport.

The association further extended its gratitude to all participating clubs, athletes, coaches, referees, officials, volunteers, supporters, and members of the Suso family for their contributions towards the success of the championship.

The successful conclusion of the 2nd National Taekwondo Championship not only honoured the memory of a respected sports leader but also reinforced the commitment of stakeholders to the continued advancement of Taekwondo in The Gambia.
